The chorus is less than a year old, having been organized last August, but there was nothing about it that suggested immaturity. Musicianship and diction were exemplary, the dark tuxedos worn by all singers made for neat appearance, and the entrances and exits had been planned to achieve optimum efficiency, dignity and style. It was the first time that the ACDA had featured a gay chorus at one of its conventions. In the chorus established an annual choral competition, the first winner of which was John Burge 's Songs of War. Good music for concerted male voices has occupied major composers only marginally in the past, and enthusiastic performers such as the New York City Gay Men's Chorus are providing an outlet and an inspiration for new music.

New York Gay Men’s Chorus
The Untold Story Of The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus
The concert offered traditional seasonal offerings by the guest conductor, Robin Kay, director of the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Men's Community Chorus, and contemporary settings, antiphonal pieces with brass, a cantata and even a sampling of P. Bach conducted by the group's founder and music director, Gary Miller. In a performance of such varied material, under two conductors, it was not surprising to find the chorus doing better with some pieces than with others. Nor was it particularly disconcerting, in view of the fact that the group has been singing less than two years, to detect occasional insecurities with pitch or perceive an element of inexperience in the way the ensemble responded to the dynamic shadings and beat patterns of its conductors. The more important impressions were made by the group's receptivity and by the evidence that its rhythmic discipline, diction and balance are already fairly well developed. The program's polyphonic settings were sung with lightness and clarity of line, attributes of no small consequence in Baroque music. There was impressive singing in the contemporary offerings as well, particularly Randall Thompson's setting of Frost's ''Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening'' and the arrangements by Roy Ringwald that ended the program.
