Gay-Straight Alliances More Important Than Ever, Advocates Say
Gay-Straight Alliance / GSA Home
High schools across the country have answered the challenge to provide safe and supportive spaces for children. The Trevor Project reports several troubling statistics. Bullying, after all, occurs across all lines and a GSA is about building advocacy in all allies. First off, know your facts.
How to Start a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA)
A GSA is a student run club, typically in high school, which provides a safe place for students to meet to support one another, talk about issues related to sexual orientation, and work to end homophobia. Many GSAs function as a support group providing safety and confidentiality to students who are exploring or struggling with their identity as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered or questioning. In addition some GSAs work on education themselves and the broader school community about sexual orientation and gender identity issues. From my point of view, the mere existence of a GSA on a school campus signals to GLBTQ youth and faculty as well as other students and faculty that this school wants to promote and practice acceptance of diversity among its membership.
Make a powerful statement by participating in the Day of Silence. Bring your school community together with Solidarity Week. Teach respect by celebrating No Name Calling Week. Foster connections and organize together year-round by starting a Gender and Sexuality Alliance at your school. Student leaders are the most valuable, powerful base of action that exists in our country today.
